Switching vmbo to havo: your next step

Did you almost get your vmbo t degree and notice that you want to learn even further on the Havo? Then the transition from vmbo to havo can be a logical next step. At the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in Eindhoven we like to think along with you about the possibilities. A new school, a different level and a new curriculum can be quite exciting. At the same time, the step to Havo 4 offers you the opportunity to further develop yourself, to face new challenges and to work towards a Havo diploma. With that diploma you can then continue to HBO or continue in vwo 5.

On our Havo we combine knowledge with skills and practice. We think it is important that you not only learn for tests, but also discover what you are good at, how you work independently and which direction suits you. If you want to go from vmbo to havo, we look not only at the conditions of admission, but also at a suitable start within our superstructure.

There are clear conditions for admission to Havo 4. You either got your VMBO T degree or you're gonna get this diploma. If you have followed seven courses, you will meet the condition of the number of courses. If you have completed six courses, the average of all your courses must be at least 6.8. In addition, we advise you to choose at most one new course when you start with us. In this way, you will not have to catch up with the switch to another level. If you choose math, participation in tutoring is compulsory.

These conditions help us to assess with you whether the transition to havo is feasible and appropriate. If you have questions about your situation, your course package or the possibilities for influx, you can contact our deans. They are watching with you the connection between your current education and Havo 4 at the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum.

What changes if you go from vmbo to havo?

The step from vmbo to havo means that you build on what you already can, but also that more of you are asked on a number of points. The amount of teaching material can be higher, the pace can be higher and you get more often assignments where you have to process information independently and make connections.

That doesn't mean you have to control everything perfectly from day one. It essentially means that you are willing to work actively, to ask questions and to take responsibility for your own development. Within our Havo we pay attention to that development. In the superstructure you will have to deal with your chosen profile and the corresponding course package. You choose from nature and technology, nature and health, economy and society or culture and society.

It is therefore important to think carefully about the direction that suits your interests, strong subjects and plans after high school. Our deans help to guide you to study and occupation and can support you in choices that affect your further school career.

So you prepare your transition vmbo to havo well for

A successful transition starts with a good preparation. Look at your course package, the admission conditions and the profile you want to follow in Havo 4. Also discuss which courses fit well and which courses you may need extra support for. We recommend that you choose at most one new course, because you already encounter enough new things in Havo 4. You start in a new environment, get new teachers and classmates and work on a different level. At the beginning of Havo 4 we pay attention to getting to know each other. After their profile selection, students end up in new composite classes and we therefore organise an introduction day. This creates space to make contact from the beginning and to find your place in the group. Also during the school year guidance and personal development are central. In the superstructure guidance is given a more individual form. Your mentor and our deans will help you with questions about your progress, profile, further education and choices for later.
