At the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum we find it important that students are well supervised. Especially during the first year, because the step from primary to secondary school can be very exciting. The student is assigned a mentor and two minimentors (students from the upper school). The mentor and classmates get to know the student well during the introduction days.
Vision on Support
We think it is important that students of the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum can develop and take responsibility for themselves. For this there is a good personal accompaniment from junior to senior year. Our teachers, mentors and year-low coordinators are closely involved with the students.
If it turns out that a student needs extra guidance with plans, learning (executive skills) or anything else, then he/she can receive remedial teaching, NT2 lessons or guidance from an apprentice counselor. Our school also offers professional guidance if there is such a thing as failure, dyslexia, gift, ASS, AD(H)D or any personal problems. The student counsellor, together with the student, investigates what works best for him/her and helps to find his/her own way at school.
In grades 1 and 2, students can use the homework class free of charge, where they can work under supervision and be helped to plan their schoolwork.
During the first weeks of junior high, all students of the HAVO and HAVO/VWO bridge classes will be tested for spelling, reading and calculating. The vwo students are tested for spelling and understanding reading. Based on the results of these tests, an advice for further guidance may follow. During the remedial teaching, the Mousework/Numo test and practice program is used. Pupils who have submitted a dyslexia declaration at the time of registration are offered during the first year of RT, so that they can make a good start in modern foreign languages in particular.
Dyslexic pupils are assigned a dyslexia coach in the higher learning years to whom they can go when they experience learning difficulties associated with their dyslexia. Students with dyslexia are entitled to time extension in tests. The coach can discuss whether the dyslexic student can also use auditory support, the so-called Kurzweil program. The dyslexia protocol is available on the website www.lcl.nl.
Students with another mother tongue who have not completed six years of education in the Netherlands will receive NT2 lessons if desired in small groups and guidance in the homework. They are entitled to time extension when checking and using a dictionary. This guidance applies to the secondary school, but also afterwards, as long as the student has not had six years of education in the Netherlands.
We offer extra challenge and guidance for more gifted students, both in the under- and in the upper building. The gymnasiumPlusclass offers education adapted to highly gifted or more gifted pupils in grade 1 and 2. In the basement we know BrainSport Junior. Students selected for this may skip some classes and work one or two hours on projects each week. In addition, students receive guidance on their executive functions, such as learning to learn to work and self-direction, so that they have an adequate learning and work attitude.
At the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum, a highly gifted coordinator, together with more gifted students, looks at what is needed to realise the appropriate challenge. This is customised individually focused on the child.
For students who need extra support for a longer period of time, an individual plan of approach is developed. In these situations, we would already like to talk to parents and students about what support is needed and to discuss what the school can offer.
